Cancer Research Benefits from

Eleventh Annual “Go Play in the Street”

The eleventh-annual 2017 “Go Play in the Street! 5K Run/Walk and Mile Fun Run/Walk” was held Saturday, October 14 in Greenfield, IL. There were 51 registered participants, along with 12 children (3- to 8-years old) who registered for the fifth-annual “Tot Trot.” All net proceeds (to date, over $35,000) are donated to support cancer research.

Overall male winner of the 2017 5K was Shannon Seaton, 19, of Greenfield, with a time of 21:55. Overall female winner was Megan Clark, 34, of Greenfield, in 22:54.

This year’s honorary “pace-setters” – who led the runners through the 3.1 mile course – are a mother/daughter team: cancer survivors Esther Arnold of Wrights, diagnosed with kidney cancer in June, 2016; and her daughter Tina Arnold Sorrells, Patterson, a one-year breast cancer survivor. They were driven through the course in a 1965 Mustang convertible driven by Bob Thaxton, formerly of Greenfield, also a cancer survivor.

“Ainsley’s Angels” participated in the 5K for the second year. This philanthropic group makes it possible for disabled children to experience the joy and freedom of “running.” As they sprint through the course, the “angels” push the children in racing chairs. Medal-winning racers Amy Martin and Rachel Antle represented “Ainsley’s Angels” this year.

During the awards ceremony, participants enjoyed Alfonso’s pizza, along with bagels, fruit, chocolate milk and water, served by Deanna Loepker, Cheryl Canavan and Marcia Price from Carrollton Bank. Medals were presented to the top female and male finishers (Clark and Seaton); and to the first- and second-place finishers in each age category. Everyone received a finisher’s medal and technical running shirt commemorating their participation.

This event would not be possible without the enormous generosity of our civic-minded local businesses: Randy Fergurson Insurance, exclusive sponsor of the “Tot Trot;” Boyd Healthcare Services; Campbell Publications; Bounce Back at Jerseyville Manor; Gable Family Pharmacy; Killion Communications Consultants; Charity Southern Baptist Church; LPL Financial, David C.
